Eco tips for guests
Save energy by turning the heating down/off when you don't need it.
Save energy by switching off the lights when leaving your room.
Save energy by being careful not to overfill the kettle in your room - use only as much water as you need.
Save energy, water and detergent by re-using towels instead of having them replaced - hang them up if you'd like to reuse them. Put old towels, which need a wash, on the floor. Your comforts of great importance to us, so don't feel guilty if you need to change your old towels!
We'll recycle the waste you leave at the motel wherever we can, but please try to produce as little waste as you can when you're here - buy food with as little packaging as possible, reuse bags, etc.
Out and about
Recycle your rubbish where you can, saving resources and reducing pollution - there are recycling facilities for cans, glass bottles and jars and newspapers and magazines on Bond St.
Shop locally and buy ethically produced products wherever you can. Try to avoid clone town chain stores, however local they might be, and avoid shopping in supermarkets as much as possible - don't let them boom at the expense of local shops. Use reusable or compostable bags wherever possible.
Eat and drink organic, local and fair trade food and drink - and help to support local and vulnerable communities, protect the environment and improve animal welfare. Farmers Market Sunday morning Southland Boys High School Herbert St
Cut emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants by coming here on public transport. If you've come by car, use it only when you need to - it's better for the planet if you use less polluting alternatives like the bus, train, bicycle, or even your own legs. Bus and train timetables and bike hire info can be found down in reception.
Follow the Countryside Code.
Respect the community and find out about Southland by talking to the locals.
Use a carbon offset scheme that enables you to offset your climate-change-causing carbon dioxide emissions, and go carbon neutral. There are many organisations about that can help you calculate how much carbon is produced as a result of your travelling. They'll suggest a financial contribution you can make, which will then be invested in green energy projects.
See www.carbonzero.co.nz
Although carbon offsetting is a useful tool, it's best to avoid emitting so much carbon dioxide in the first place by, for example, using public transport as much as possible.
